However, I had a great desire to view the Circus Maximus and so we decided to press on, past the Arco di Costantino to the large open field, where the Circus Maximus was located in Ancient Roman times. By the time we reached the Colosseum, it was quite hot and we were beginning to run out of puff. We headed straight up the Via del Corso towards the Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument and then on to the Forum and the Colosseum. From here the tour group members were released to explore Rome for four hours.

The tour we were doing was called “Rome by yourself” and we were dropped off by our tour coach near the Piazza del Popolo. We visited Rome, on a tour, for a day whilst our cruise ship was berthed at the port of Civitavecchia.
